Microsoft Outlook Send/Receive Group "The Operation Failed"

For no apparent reason, my outlook profile was corrupted this morning. After a little research, I found the cause and a temporary solution. I thought it may be of interest to you, since you are reading this.

When you click Send and Receive in Microsoft Outlook, the following error message may appear:

The operation failed. An object could not be found.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, create a new profile:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Mail icon.
  3. In the Mail Setup dialog box, click Show Profiles.
If you want to be able to select a specific profile each time you start Outlook, click the General tab, click Prompt for a profile to be used, and then click Add.
  4. In the New Profile dialog box, under Profile Name, type a descriptive name for the new profile, and then click OK.
  5. In the E-mail Accounts dialog box, select Add a new e-mail account in the e-mail options, and then click Next.
  6. Click the type of server that your e-mail account works with, and then click Next.
  7. Complete all of the required fields, including those that are on the tabs that appear after you click More Settings.
  8. When you finish providing the required information, click Finish.

MORE INFORMATION

By default, Outlook Address Book and personal folder (.pst) files are automatically added to each new profile, except in Microsoft Exchange Server. Personal folder (.pst) files are not added by default in Exchange Server.

If you right-click the Microsoft Outlook icon on your desktop and then click Properties, the Mail Setup dialog box appears. You can add a new profile by following Steps 3 through 8 in the Resolution section.

Your page did NOT solve my problem!
I don't care about choosing a profile. I just want my send/receive button to stop giving an "Operation Failed" message. I can send email just fine. I just can't recieve any. If what we are doing is to fake the computer out with a new profile, OK, but you don't say that. I don't want to bother with different profiles. I never did that before, and it has worked fine for a couple of years until all of a sudden I get this "operation Failed" message.

Did the trick. I took a shortcut though and found that simply copying the corrupt profile created one that worked. I set the new one as the default. Very handy considering I didn't know the guy's POP password while working on his system.

Very cool! Had the same problem with a client's machine and when recreated profile the error disappeared. Thanks for the information, most definitely useful.

Thank you so much.

That totally helped me with my problem. I was so frustrated cause my laptop is my baby and I've never had any problems then all of a sudden I couldn't download my emails. So I'm glad to get my baby back.

Ciao!

Brilliant - solved my problem, thanks.
I got into scrapes when an office XP update failed.
With microsoft stuff being as flaky as it is,
it's a good job there are folks like you to help out folks like us.
Thanks for taking the time.

Jon Allen,

You are INCREDIBLY rude considering this guide was posted out of the kindness of his/her heart. SO WHAT if it did not work for you. Move on, find a life, get over your bitterness, and then find another web page that will tell you how to do what you want.

This fix did what I wanted and I am grateful.

Thank you

Thanks a ton! P.S. You don't have to re-enter any thing. Just export any info that you will need to an easy to find file while you are under your old profile. Then open outlook under your new profile and import it. After you have everything you can delete the old profile. I used the comma seporated values file format. (.csv)

Great pointers, though what I did at the end was simply copy the exisiting profile. It appeared to uncorrupt it

You'll never believe the pain I went through until I found this. Used XP auto-repair. Didn't work. Used Re-install. Didn't work. Physically uninstalled and re-installed. Guess what? Didn't work! Checked out every MS Knowledge Base article that looked anything like. None of them helped.

Thank God for Google, and for public-spirited folks like you guys. I just copied my existing profile and it started working fine!

Ok, the resolution has helped a great many but I am still experiencing errors. I ahve reinstalled (x2), used the repair feature in control panel . add/remove programs, downloaded every available fix/patch form microsoft, downladed SP3 all without resolution. Anyone else got any ideas besides asking for a refund?

# re: Microsoft Outlook Send/Receive Group "The Operation Failed" 1/9/2007 7:09 PM sb

Hi : I agree with an older comment. In my case the problem repeated itself. So should I create another profile? My mail is now distributed across 3 profiles. I think.
Something is wrong with outlook and we don't seem to know the real cause.
Thanks
sb

It's a virus. Open Task Manager while Outlook is open. You'll see 2 versions of "Outlook.exe". Close Outlook. You'll see 1 version. In Task Manager, "End Process" of the remaining "Outlook.exe".

Open Outlook and then you can send and receive.
